Death Has Claimed Another Pioneer

Mrs. Hannah A. Burns Passed Away After A Short Illness

Death has claimed another one of the oldest residents of Wabash County in the passing away of Mrs. Hannah A. Burns at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. John T. Stansfield, on North Cherry Street, the end coming Sunday afternoon at 4:15 o'clock. Mrs. Burns's illness was of short duration, her death following an attack of neuralgia, which enfeebled condition due to her advanced years could not withstand.

Mrs. Burns was the daughter of Harriet Lind and George Gilbert. She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., November 13, 1826; and her age was 84 years, 6 months and 21 days. At the age of 13 she settled in Carmi with her parents, and on May 15, 1851, she was united in marriage to Neil Campbell Burns at Grayville, Ill. Her husband preceded her to the grave in 1895. From their union was born several children, two of whom died in infancy. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. W.E. Keen of Keensburg, Mrs. John T. Stansfield of this city, and Mrs. Sallie C. Estes of Elko, Nev., and two sons, George C. and Charles P. Burns of California. She is also survived thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In her youth Mrs. Burns united with the Presbyterian Church, but later she transferred her membership to the First Methodist Episcopal Church of this city, and remained a faithful member until death. Mrs. Burns was a woman of the highest character and she was held in great esteem by all who knew her, and these will regret to learn her long and useful life is closed.

The funeral will be held from the Stansfield residence at 722 Cherry Street, this morning at 9 o'clock, Rev. C.D. Shumard of the M.E. Church conducting the services. The remains will be laid to rest in beautiful Rose Hill Cemetery.
