Gordon Harvey Williams, 78, Harrisburg, died Sunday November 4, 2007, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
One of three children born to Lola (Behrick) and Harvey Williams, Gordon Harvey Williams was born June 2, 1929, and raised on "Chick Hill" in Gaskins City. His sister Norma, preceded him in death, as did his brother Norman of Oakland City, Indiana. Gordan married Faye David in 1950. She preceded him in death in 1990.
Early on, Gordon worked for the railroad and TVA before spending 42 years as a coal miner for Peabody Coal, most of those years at Will Scarlet Mine near Stonefort. Gordon, an avid water skier, spent many hours boating on the Ohio, and still lays claim to the record for skiing backwards 104 miles, accomplished in 1953. He also performed at the Du Quoin State Fair when they hosted ski shows on the fairgrounds lake.
Gordon is survived by his daughters, Cathy (Jim Hammersley) of Simpson and Toni(David Perry); and grandchildren Jonathan Perry and Michaela Perry, all of Springfield.
In Indiana, his sister-in-law, Patty Williams survives along with niece Mary Ellen(Williams) DeMotte, nephews Mike Williams and David Williams, as well as many great nieces and nephews.
