He joined the Border Regiment in August 1914. He went through the Dardanelles fighting when he was wounded. After leaving hospital he went to France. His section sergeant wrote "We were waiting for the order to attack and the Germans were shelling our positions very heavily. One of the shells landed where Tom and some of his comrades were, killing him and seven others instantly. Your son was a liked and well respected member of the Lewis gun section. It was a great shock to the boys as I know it will be for you."

Son of William and Kate Charlton (nee Chapelhowe) of Lowther Village, Penrith, Cumbria. Prior to enlisting he was a Forester at Scaws Farm, Penrith.
