Rita Ann Desmond, formerly of Wilmington, passed away peacefully at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes on January 16, 2014 with her loving family by her side.

Born April 13, 1918 to the late Frank & Isabella McGuigan, Rita was a lifetime member of St. Ann's Parish. She graduated from P.S.DuPont High School and Goldey Beacom College. Rita worked at Hercules as well as the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington Tribunal where she was one of the first three women sworn in at the Chancery Office in February 1972 as Notaries or Actuaries of the Court. At that time, only three other diocese in the country had women who were sworn in as Notaries or Actuaries.

Rita enjoyed over 50 years vacationing at her cottage at Crystal Beach Manor, MD. She enjoyed traveling and going to bingo and the casinos. She is also famous for her Southern Pound Cake recipe that she has passed down to many family and friends.

Rita was predeceased by her husband, William J. (Bill), and her son, W. James (Jim) and two great grandchildren, Cassandra and Bryn Rolph. She is survived by her son, John (Jack) and his wife, Roseann of Lewes, daughter, Fran Horowitz and her husband, Carl of OK, son, Thomas and his wife, Alicia of VA, and daughter-in-law, Patricia Desmond of Wilmington. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at the Doherty Funeral Home, 1900 Delaware Ave., Wilmington on Tuesday, January 21 from 9-10:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Ann's Church, Gilpin Ave and Union Sts., Wilmington at 11 am. Burial will be in Cathedral Cemetery.

The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Ann's Church, 2013 Gilpin Ave., Wilmington, DE 19806 or The Little Sisters of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Rd., Newark, DE 19713.
