Correspondence of the Newark Daily Advertiser.
West Point, Thursday night.
I avail myself of the down boat, now in sight, to tell you that one of the Cadets (Mr. Deshler,) from Alabama, was drowned while bathing [in the Hudson River] with others, about 9 o’clock. He is said to have stood very high in his class in Mathematics and to have been otherwise very promising. Great gloom is spread throughout the Camp, where, when news of the death was announced, a Stag Dance was just commencing. It was of course stopped instantly. It is said that some other person bathing the night before cried Help in sport and tonight those hoaxed before were unheedful of the cry. The Cadets are said to be very indifferent swimmers. The body has not been recovered yet.
Yours, &c. K.
