Vivian Marie Howard Roewe Adolphsen passed into grace on Saturday evening, March 29th, 2003 after celebrating her 79th birthday surrounded by her loved ones. She lived a full life completely present to her community, church, and family. Born March 29th, 1924, in Lebanon, Illinois to William F. Howard and Monica Lela Barton, Vivian first demonstrated her great spirit when she overcame a disability at birth, receiving pioneering medical treatment from Shriners' Hospital. After graduating from Saint Teresa's Academy in 1942, Vivian worked for the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. In 1946, she met and married a fine lieutenant, and thus began her forty-three year romance with her first husband, Philip A. Roewe, who passed away in 1989. Moving to Chehalis in 1957, Vivian raised a family of seven children and co-owned the Chehalis and Fox Theatres with her husband Phil. Vivian became a professional real estate agent, working for Allied Realty and Adolphsen Real Estate. During that time she was elected the first woman president of the Chehalis Chamber of Commerce, and served four terms as the first woman mayor on the Chehalis City Council. Her civic commitment included twenty years of service to the City Council. As a member of the Twin Transit Co-mission, Vivian helped bring public bus service to Lewis County. Vivian's professional and philanthropic life reflected a deep commitment to community service through the March of Dimes, Sertoma International, Altrusa, Twin Cities Chamber, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, and other organizations. Most recently Vivian was involved in forming Pope's Kids Place, a respite and care center for children with disabilities and their families, crowning a life-long commitment to children with disabilities. A deeply spiritual Catholic, Vivian was an active parishioner of St. Joseph Church and was involved in many aspects of church ministry.

In 1996, Vivian married Theodore J. Adolphsen of Chehalis and Billings, Montana. The couple has enjoyed seven years of devoted companionship and her beloved husband is loved and cherished by all her family. In addition to her husband, Vivian is survived by her sisters Kay Moore and Genevieve Howard of California, three sons, four daughters, their spouses, seventeen grandchildren and two great-grand children.

Vivian's daily source of pride rested in the many accomplishments of her progeny as they spread her energy, love and comm-unity commitment. Survivors include Judge Michael Roewe, his wife Karen and their children Philip, Patrick and Kathleen Roewe - Kristina and Brian Rogers, of Bozeman, Montana and Lt. John Rogers, Kamille and Brianne Rogers - Jan and Ed Fleming, of Chehalis and Montana and Erica and Mike Lewis and their daughter Delaney, Amanda and Frank Petrik, and Samantha and Matt Fry and their daughter Madalyn - Julie and Ron Isaacson of Dili, East Timor and AFC Nick Isaacson and Melissa Isaacson, and Elizabeth Isaacson- David Roewe and Tamara Coulson of Vancouver and Chris, Matt and Shawn Roewe and Kalan Coulson - Susan Roewe and Chris Fawcett of Olympia and USAFA Cadet Colin Walker, Timothy and A.J. Walker - Matthew Roewe and Amy Grotefendt of Seattle, Barbara Roewe of Chehalis, and the Adolphsen family: stepdaughter Mary Alice Jaksha and her children, Katie Bess and Willie, Billings, Herman and Virginia of Chehalis, Karl and Noni of Centralia, Fred and Jo of Boise, Jens and Pauline of Sacramento, Goldie and Sam Silva of Carmichael, along with many dear friends.
Vivian is also preceded in death by a brother, Col. Vincent Howard, and her parents.

Vivian will be remembered best as the proud and generous matriarch of the Roewe family, great in spirit and grand in heart. Those who reaped the benefits of her tireless love, though they may suffer temporarily from her loss, will be ever encouraged and strengthened by her memory.

A memorial vigil celebration is scheduled for 7PM, Thursday, April 3rd at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Chehalis, followed on Friday by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 in the morning.
