Charles "Chuck" W. Gregg, 81, of Manistee, died Sunday morning, Jan. 19, 2014, at West Shore Medical Center.
He was born April 20, 1932, in Detroit, the son of the late Robert and Frances (Wood) Gregg.
He was a graduate of the Leland Academy.
He moved from Frankfort to Manistee in 1951. He married Thelma Rodgers on Nov. 8, 1952, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
He served in the Michigan National Guard from 1951 to 1952, then was called up to the U.S. Army where he served until 1954. During that time he was stationed in Italy as a truck mechanic.
During the 1960s, he was elected to serve as a Manistee County commissioner.
He was also a charter member of the Manistee Township Fire Department, which was established in 1973, and served as its chief.
From 1970 to 1974 he was a deputy in the Manistee County Sheriff's Department.
Since 1964, he also worked both full time and part time at the Manistee Area Public Schools.
From 1979 to 1995 he was employed at Cadillac Supply in Manistee, initially as a counterman but was a manager when he retired. After retirement, he worked part time for Manistee Township.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Thelma; his children, Judith (John) Gielczyk, of Holland, James (Susan) Gregg, of Tallahassee, Fla., John (Mary Francis) Gregg, of Ann Arbor; and Jill (Rick) Clever, of Toledo, Ohio; his grandchildren, Robert, Matthew and Andrew Gielczyk, and Michael and Megan Gregg; and by two great-grandchildren, Willa and Wren Gielczyk.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Gregg Jr.; a stepbrother, William "Billy" Gregg; and his stepfather, Stewart Haggart.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, with the Rev. Philip Nordstrand officiating. Final interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
