4th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment served in the Spanish-American War as part of the occupation forces in Cuba. It was mustered in on 19-20 May 1898 at Springfield, IL and mustered out on 2 May, 1899 at Augusta, GA

My grandfather was a regular at the VFW in Tucson. There they nicknamed him "Rough Rider."

I wish I could have listened in on their "stories."

Gravesite Details

I believe my grandfather William D. Bates(Baits) was born with the Baits way of spelling, however at some time in his life began using the Bates spelling. His sons were all known as Bates. He was recorded Baits at his military enlistment.
