Alexander studied first at the University of Glasgow in his native Scotland (1856-57), then at the University of Toronto in Canada, then at United Presbyterian Hall in Toronto (1859-61). He was to Presbyterian ministry in 1872 by Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Presbytery. He began his pastoral work in Wyoming (1873-76), after which he served as Synod Missionary in these states, in this order: Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota, New England, and Montana. He did that mission work for 19 years.

Meanwhile, he also served as pastor at the Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon, Iowa for 7 years, and at the church in Glidden, Iowa for 2 years.

It was said of Alexander that, "He was a restless man. With the persistence of a Scotsman and the versatility of a Yankee, the Dr. was always waiting for something to turn up. And if the thing failed to turn up he turned it. New England was too slow for him, Iowa was too flat for his Scotch taste; but he is in love with the mountains and the mountaineers.

He was blessed in his domestic life. His first wife blessed him with a son, Dr. Thomas Baird, and a daughter, Mrs. Fordham, who survive him. His second wife Miss Jane Ash of Mount Vernon brought him delight.

The man who for forty years bore so many people on his heart just might find a Nebo up in the mountains so that he might not come down to us."
