The son of Henry & Cassandra (Spangler) Lightner, he married Susan Strock and fathered Sarah Elizabeth (b. 11/11/59 - married Theodore Farner), John F. (b. @1861), Henry E. (b. @1864), Emma Susan (b. 10/23/71 - married William Allison Burkholder), Alice R. (b. @1875), Annie Mary "Alice" (b. 12/25/77 - married a Dudley), and Charles E. (b. @1879). In 1860, he was a carpenter living in Mercersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 6' 0" tall with light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted at the stated age of twenty-nine in Chambersburg October 16, 1862, and mustered into federal service there November 1 as a private with Co. E, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). A note in ARIAS says, "Joined Reg. 8/10/63," suggesting - barring clerical error - that he was ill and never served active duty because he honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-two in Chambersburg February 27, 1865, and mustered into federal service there February 28 as a corporal with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. K. Hospitalized May 8, 1865, he honorably discharged the service July 21, 1865, to date June 30, 1865.

In 1908, he attended the Pennsylvania Monument dedication ceremony at the Monocacy battlefield. While the 87th Pennsylvania had fought there on July 9, 1864, Ignatius was not then a member of the regiment. He died in Guilford Township, Franklin County, from a "cerebral hemorrhage."
