RUSSELL B. ABEE Sr.

HICKORY - Russell Blair Abee Sr., 85, of Hickory, passed away Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, following a brief illness.

Born June 12, 1918, he was the son of the late Solomon L. and Lillie Alice Seitz Abee.

His education included a degree in Architecture from Clemson University and The New York Structural Institute, New York City, N.Y.

While at Clemson, Mr. Abee played both football and basketball. He was a member of the 1940 Cotton Bowl team and the 1939 Southern Conference Basketball Championship team.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. While in the military, he served as a ground instrument instructor for the U.S. Navy Air Corps. He also worked with the U.S. Army Engineering Corp.

Russell worked as an architect in Baltimore, Md. He worked as an architect and general contractor in Charlotte. He also worked in the Federal Housing Administration's Charlotte office. He was the owner of Abee Piedmont Realty and built homes and sold real estate in the Hickory area.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Brian Abee, and two brothers, Ken Abee and Jack Abee.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ethel Dugas Abee of the home; four children, Blair Abee and wife, Lynne, and Stewart Abee and wife, Joan, of Hickory, Rita Abee Bolick and husband, Leonard, of Salisbury, and Craig Abee and wife, Ginny, of Boiling Springs, S.C.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Justin Abee of Savannah, Ga., Joseph Bolick of Columbia, S.C., Sarah Bolick of Salisbury, Miranda Abee of Hickory, Greg Abee of Boone, Isaac Abee and Hannah Abee of Boiling Springs, S.C., Ivan Siebel of Canberra, Australia, and Adam Setzer of Chapel Hill.

Survivors also include a brother, Carroll Abee of the Abernethy Center, and two sisters, Miriam Majors and husband, Oliver, of Roanoke, Va., and Millie Heavner of Hickory.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Robert Shoffner will officiate.

Interment will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.

The Abee family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight, Monday, at Bass-Smith Funeral Home.
