John BAUER, one of the most highly respected citizens of Greene County, died of carcinoma of the stomach, at his home one mile west of Elliston Monday evening at 11 o’clock after an illness covering about two weeks.

He was born October 25, 1826, died March 27, 1905; aged 78 years, 5 months and two days.

For more than forty years he had been a citizen of Greene County, having come here from Owen County about 1863. He was born in Pennsylvania and moved from there at an early day to Ohio, but the fever to come still father West got hold of him and so he came to Indiana, settling first in Steuben County and from there, as narrated above to this county.

Besides a wife, three children survive, all of whom are well-known residents of Fairplay Township. They are Levi J. BAUER, Mrs. Mack SHEEHEE and Mrs. Simon VANDEVENTER.

He is survived also by two brothers—one in Illinois and one in Kansas; and by two sisters—one of whom resides in Owen County and the other in Ohio.

He was an unassuming man—plain in all of his tastes and habits—but he possessed those sterling qualities of honesty, sobriety, purity of thought and kindliness of heart, that go to make up the full measure of true and perfect manhood.

He lived well the long years that were allotted him and the community where he resided is better because of his having lived in it.

The funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10:30 o’clock from Castle Hill Church, in charge of the Rev. W. H. WYLIE and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at that place.
