Son of Jacob & Sarah Williams Chilton, who came to Wapello County Iowa from England in 1857. He married Miss Mary Eckers March 14, 1909. She died Oct. 27, 1915. Elected to his first public office in 1919 as Commissioner of streets & Public improvements. Elected Mayor of Ottumwa in 1923 and retired in 1925 from that office.

Charles Chilton, Former Mayor, Dies
Former Mayor Charles Chilton, 81, died at 9:25 PM Tuesday in the St. Joseph's Hospital. He had been in failing health for several months and seriously ill 12 days. Mr. Chilton was the last of the immediate family of Jacob and Sarah Williams Chilton, who came to Ottumwa from England in 1857. He was born here, May 1, 1865, after attending the public schools became associated with his father and brothers in general contracting. Later he established and operated a stone quarry at the south end of the Vine Street Bridge for many years. He married Miss Mary Eckers, March 14, 1909, and she died October 27, 1915. He then made his home with his sister, Mrs. D. B. Johnston, and after her death, July 22, 1944, with his nephew. Clarence S. Johnston managing editor of The Courier, at 207 W. Park Ave. Besides Mr. Johnson, Mr. Chilton is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Chester F. Linden of Riverside, Illinois, and Mrs. Clell Kirk of Ottumwa. He was a charter member of Ottumwa Lodge 347 of the Elks and of the Royal Arcanum. Mr. Chilton was elected to his first public office in 1919 as commissioner of streets and public improvements. Two years later he was elected mayor and reelected in 1923 retiring in 1925. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Thursday at the Lester Jay funeral home. Dr. Theodore H. Leonard of the first Methodist Church will be in charge. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.
