My grandmother was Winifred Cronin. She was born Winifred Quinn, in England to parents who left Ireland to live in England. She was born on December 6, 1890. When she was two years old her mother died in childbirth along with her infant brother. Her father was unable to care for her so she was sent off to Ireland to live with relatives. Ireland was facing hard times so her life was not easy.

At the age of 16 she came to the United State as an indentured servant. She arrived on April 21, 1906 on the ship Caronia. The ship departed from Queenstown. Her last residence before immigrating was Ballaghadereen. She arrived with $10.00 and was coming to Manhattan, New York to work as a servent.

She met William Cronin, a native of New York City and they got married.
They bought a house out on Long Island. They lived in Suffolk County in a small hamlet called Bay Shore. Winifred and William had seven children together. They had William, Bernard, twins named Thomas and James, then twins named Joseph and Edward. Winifred also gave birth to a daughter who sadly died shortly after birth due to a heart condition.

In the late 1940's Winifred's husband Bill died of cancer. The youngest set of twins were only 16 years old. Winifred began to get dementia in the late 1960's and was no longer able to live on her own. After living with her son Joseph and then Thomas she fell and broke her hip. She went to live at a nursing home to get the care she needed. She lived there until her death in July of 1974.
