Joseph Buffington Cash and his wife Amelia Clementine Hooper are buried on their old home place which is now located in the 17,000 acres Lake Russell Wildlife Management Area, part of the Chattahoochee National Forest in parts of Habersham, Stephens, and Banks Counties. Their graves are in the portion that falls in Habersham County, north of Mount Airy off of GA Highway 13 and US Highway 123, which goes from Cornelia to Toccoa. Turn off 123 onto the road that runs in front of Welcome Home Baptist Church, cross the bridge over the railroad tracks and go to the old church cemetery, which is surrounded by a chain link fence. On the north east side of the cemetery is Forest Service Road 191 and it is this road that leads into the management area. Stay on 191 until the road forks, then bear to the right and take next left turn toward Duckett Lake. The graves are located in the woods across the road from the lake. There is a chain link fence around three sides of the graves. His tombstone has been broken into three pieces. Most of the engraving was unreadable but date of death, May 19, 1888, was identifiable. Their graves are within a hundred yards of their old home place. Rocks from the foundation are scattered about but have left a vague outline of where the house once stood. The area is reverting back to the forested landscape it once was and is now covered in a canopy of trees and a blanket of vegetation. Only a few artifacts remain where the house once stood. Shards of pottery vessels and broken bits of glass were scattered around. Some of the pieces of glass indicate the house had glass windows. Other pieces are from dishes and lamp shades. Bricks were hand made by slave labor. Narcissus and Crepe Myrtle are still growing and blooming in the Spring time. A grave simply called "Baby Cash" is located nearby. The identify of this child is not known. This is a beautiful and peaceful final resting place for Joseph and Millie Cash. "Joe and Millie" Cash's old home place is located in a portion of the wildlife management area that is a fuel wood gathering area. Some of these roads are gated and are opened seasonally.
