Son of a dedicated Lutheran minister, Armand E. Mueller, Edwin was attending Fresno State College and died as a result of injuries sustained when he was struck by an automobile while performing his duties as a special traffic officer. He was assisting in directing traffic at the Fresno Christmas-tree lane. The death of the 18 year old came about as he was helping others celebrate Christmas by viewing the famed lighted trees, he was deprived of the joy which he so eagerly anticipated --- of celebrating Christmas with his family in Van Nuys. Instead the family and church family were faced with the loss of Edwin right at Christmas, 1952. In addition to his parents Edwin left his brothers, Tommy and Stephen, and a baby sister, Marilyn Margaret. From "The Lutheran Witness", January 20, 1953: After the service, for more than half an hour, friends and members of the Van Nuys Lutheran Church congregation filed past the casket paying their last tribute. The aged and the young, boys like Edwin in the full bloom of youth, mothers with babies in their arms who like him had become God's children by the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, pastors and teachers of the District and their wives, whose hearts poured over in sympathy and understanding for their beloved District President Armand Mueller and his family;men in the State Highway Patrol, members of the Fresno police department, fellow students at Fresno State College -- all paid their final tribute to one whose death we may count untimely, but whose life fulfilled the purposes of his Creator and Redeemer."
