SHELBY – Robert L. Bland, 62, of Ohio 39 West died Thursday, July 19, 2007, in Heartland of Bucyrus after a sudden illness.

Born Dec. 9. 1944, in Shelby, to Robert Marsh Bland and Fannie J. Frank Ebersole Bland Bair a lifelong Shelby resident. Bob was a 1962 graduate of Shelby High School and was employed as a clerk and communications coordinator with the Ohio Steel Tube Co. for 38 years, retiring in 2000.

An avid sports fan he enjoyed following the Shelby Whippets, Ohio State, the Cincinnati Bengals and Reds. He served as president of the Shelby Blues Football Team, was commissioner of the Ohio Football team and the voice of the Mansfield Hawks semi-pro basketball team. Bob along with his special friend Skip Faulkner, ran the call-in sports program “The Pressbox on WSWR. He was a member of Steel Workers Union Local 3057 and former vice-president of the Republican Club.

Bob enjoyed kids and taught Junior Achievement business classes to St. Mary's 5th graders for 12 years, coached the Shelby Spirit Baseball Team and Shelby Little League Baseball, where he was past-president.

He was known for editorial writings, love of animals, and was ;proud of his Wyandot Indian Heritage. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Vicki Sines Bland, whom he wed Nov. 9, 1968; son, Shannon (Kim Bland of Shelby; three grandchildren, Cody Bland, Ian Oney, and Brandi Bland; his faithful companion, Shelby the wonder dog; one brother, Lonnie (Janet) Ebersole of Mansfield; two sisters, M. Virginia (William) Buch of N. Fort Myers, FL, and Rosemary (Tom) Wilkinson of Shelby; two stepbrothers, Howard (Kathy) Bair of Shelby and Delbert (Doris) Bair of Mansfield; special nephew, Rodney Ebersole; and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Nolan Bair. And two stepbrothers.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2007 from Barkdull Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Bob was proud of the fact his grandson will be attending The Ohio State University. Memorial expressions to be made to the family to help fund college expenses.
