A financier, a banker: He was a member of the St. Louis Merchants Exchange. A student at Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University he received his degree in 1897. He made May Dillon his wife in 1902.

His father had amassed a fortune. His grandfather was one of the first settlers of the prairie of central Missouri; a respectable farmer on a grand scale on an equally grand prairie. Lemuel Carter & his father, Thomas Whitman Carter lived in two of the finest homes in St. Louis & truly typify the living of the American Dream. His home was #8 Portland Place, St. Louis.
