Charles Herbert Payne, age 83, of Oneonta, Alabama passed away at UAB Pallative Care on January 26, 2014. Born in Blount County, he was the son of the late Willie Henry and Margie Ethel Terrell Payne. He is also preceded in death by wife, Mary Ellen Glenn Payne; brothers, Howard Payne, Hoyt Payne, Klyne Payne, and Carl Payne; and sisters, Merle Wren, Ruby Nell Blythe and Joyce Smith. Mr. Payne served in the United States Army as a Heavy Machine Operator and was a member of the US Boxing Team. He retired from Hayes International as an air craft inspector. He was an avid rabbit hunter and played championship checkers. He is survived by sons, John Charles Payne (Janet) of Oneonta, Herbert Kyle Payne (Melonie Ann) of Notasulga and Glen Jeffery Payne (Debbie) of Oneonta; grandchildren, April Payne Reeves, Zachery Payne (April), Nicholas Payne, Willie Payne (Ashley), Amanda Payne Sides (Stephen), Honnie Payne Arnold (Doug), Bo Payne (Brook), Cougar Payne (Dina) and Cody Payne; great grandchildren, Kristin Reeves, Zoe and Charlie Payne, Alexander and Jagger Payne, Luke and Abigael Arnold and McCoy Payne; brothers, D.F. Payne (Nell) of Allgood; sister, Dot Bradley of Trussville; and wife, Ralphene Payne of Oneonta.
Bro. John Metzler will officiate graveside funeral services on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 11AM from New Hope Cemetery. Mr. Payne will lie in state at Lemley Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 29, 2013 from 5:30PM until 7PM.
Pallbearers: Doug Arnold, Cody Payne, Mickey Short, Dago Atkinson, Zach Payne and Bo Payne.
