Mr. Paul Harold Abernathy, 84, of Concord, and a former resident of Raleigh passed away Thursday at Transitional Health Services.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Monday at St John's Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Richard E. Wynne.

The family will receive friends at 2:200 p.m. Monday in the church sanctuary. Entombment will follow at Montlawn Cemetery with military honor rites.

Paul was born in Rowan County on October 25, 1925, son of the late Oscar Monroe and Nannie Edwards Abernathy. He was a 1943 graduate of Landis High School. Paul was a retired Sergeant First Class from the U.S. Army, and later worked for IBM in the Research Triangle as a Senior Production Analyst. He was an active member at St. John's Baptist Church serving in many capacities, a member of the Capital City Civitans Club, and volunteered with "Meals on Wheels". Paul thoroughly enjoyed playing cards with his grandchildren, Glenn Miller music, World War II history and Duke basketball.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Porter Abernathy; daughter, Pam A. Holland and husband, Clay of Evans GA; son, Dale Abernathy and wife, Vickie of Mooresville; sisters, Alta Rimer of Marion, SC and Ruth Ball and husband, Robert of Shallotte NC; and grandchildren, Karin Abernathy, Ashleigh Holland, Angela Holland, and Daniel Holland. "Papaw" was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
