Gertrude was the daughter of William and Fannie Moody Bennett. She was married in 1896 to William J "Willie" Wingate/Windgate in 1896 in Bandera County. Together, they had one daughter, Myrtle, born in 1897. In 1901, Willie Wingate was murdered by his wife's grandfather, George Moody, while Wingate was standing in his father-in-law's yard in Bandera County. After his death, Gertrude married Robert Moegelin and the family moved to Bexar County, where she lived until her death.
