Thomas graduated from New Hanover High School in 1946 where he was a member of the ROTC. Later he joined the NC National Guard in Shallotte and served for nine years as the supply sergeant with the rank of Sgt. First Class. He was also employed with by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad for three years.
During his school days, Thomas worked at a variety store in Wilmington, NC. After graduation he came to Shallotte to work with his uncle, E.H. Kirby, who owned Kirby's Department Store. When his uncle retired, Thomas purchased the business and enjoyed working the merchandise and meeting people.
Thomas is survived by his wife Evelyn Register Batson; a son, Cal Batson, wife Stephanie; a daughter, Julie B. Owens, husband David; three grandchildren, Zachary Batson, Kelly Willetts-Reddick, husband Stephen and Saxon Owens, wife Katie. He is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy B. Casteen, husband E.J. of Raleigh and Grace Carolyn Austin of Riegelwood. Thomas was a member of Old Shallotte Baptist Church in Grissettown where he was a deacon for many years.
Visitation will be from 2:00 until 3:00 PM, with the funeral service at 3:00 PM, on Sunday, February 2, 2014, in the Old Shallotte Baptist Church by The Reverend Landis Lancaster. Entombment will follow in the Brunswick Memorial Gardens Community Mausoleum, Shallotte.
