He attended Bay Path College. He served in World War II, earning a Bronze Star. Following the war, he married the late Edith (Siegel) Bashevkin, who predeceased him in 1994. Mr. Bashevkin spent his entire working life in the family business, Butler Wholesale, until his retirement in 1983. He was fortunate to meet and marry Mildred Shapiro of Baltimore and moved there in 1999. For many years he spent winters in Hollywood, Fla., and returned first to North Adams and later to Baltimore for the remainder of the year.
Mr. Bashevkin most enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who provided him with enormous pride. Mr. Bashevkin is survived by his beloved family: wife, Mildred (Kramer) Shapiro; his sons, Alan (Nancy Pearlman) Bashevkin of Bennington, Vt., and Dr. Michael (Joy) Bashevkin of Lawrence, N.Y., and step-children, Philip (Aldonna) Shapiro of Centreville, Va., David (Sarah) Shapiro of Baltimore, Md., Judy (Avi) Auerbach of Efrat, Israel and Steve (Becky) Gordon of Baltimore, Md.; his grandchildren, Sarah, Elana, Rachel, Dovid, Elie, Eli, and Sam, 15 great-grandchildren, and his siblings, Robert (Barbara) and Irving Bashevkin, Ruth Kelman, and Helen Yulman. He was predeceased by his siblings, Hilda, Albert, Esther, and Sadie.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Services and interment were held on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, in the Beth Israel Cemetery, Clarksburg. The Bashevkin family will observe shiva at their home, 213 Settlers Road, Bennington, Vt., today, Saturday, Feb. 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 2, from 3 to 5 p.m.
