Johann Bernard Awerkamp came to Quincy in 1855 with his brother William Awerkamp and widowed mother, Maria Theresia Grasmeter Awerkamp (Averkamp). At the age of twelve, Johann Bernard Awerkamp became an apprentice in the office of the Quincy Tribune, published by Carl Rotteck. Later he was employed in different stores until December 1869 when he secured a position in the Ricker Bank and gradually advancing where in 1881, The Ricker National Bank was organized and he was selected as assistant cashier which he held after 1876.
