Loss To His Friends, Robert Pell Helmbold Succumbs to Pneumonia.

Robert Pell Helmbold, son-in-law of ex-Senator J. H. Mitchell, died of pneumonia early yesterday morning at his home, 561 Irving street. Mr. Helmbold's illness was very brief. He contracted a severe cold on a visit to Salem two weeks ago, that, on this return, developed into tonsillitis. He took no precautions, and, about a week ago, he was attacked with pneumonia. His illness did not appear very serious, and he improved rapidly. Wednesday he was considered very much better, and his recovery was thought to be only a matter of time, but at night his illness took an unfavorable turn and he grew rapidly worse. He died at 7:30 o'clock yesterday morning.

Mr. Helmbold's death is regarded as a personal loss by every one who ever came in contact with him. He was a clean-cut, refined gentleman, and a successful business man. During the eight years that he lived in Portland he made hosts of friends, and his sudden death will come as a shock to them.

Mr. Helmbold was a son of H. T. Helmbold, of Philadelphia, who became a millionaire through the manufacture of buchu. The son was born about 33 years ago in New York city, and as a boy was surrounded by the best associations. He was educated in Paris, and spent much of his early life in European travel. About eight years ago he came to Portland and was employed as bookkeeper in the office of Corbitt & Macleay. In September of 1893 he was appointed special agent for the Manhattan Life Insurance Company, and was connected with it until last November, when he went over to the Equitable.

About a year ago he married Mrs. J. A. Handy, a widowed daughter of ex-Senator Mitchell, Mr. Helmbold was a devoted husband, their married life was very happy. His death has prostrated Mrs. Helmbold. Mr. Helmbold's father died several years ago in the East, but his mother, who lives in New York, survives him.

The funeral service will be held at the residence Saturday morning, and will be private. The service will be read by Rev. J. E. Simpson, of St. Mark's Episcopal church. The burial will be at Riverview.
