World War I Military Figure. Anderson was the last known survivor of the famous "Christmas Day Truce" between British and German soldiers which took place December 25, 1914. This truce was just one of several that took place that year. Some of these lasted for several days to a few weeks after Christmas. Unfortunately, the truce he took part in only lasted a few hours, and Christmas truces never again occurred during the rest of the war. He was 18 years old and serving with the 5th Battalion The Black Watch. Part of his duties during the war was to act as a valet for Captain Fergus Bowes-Lyon (uncle to Queen Elizabeth II). He was wounded by shrapnel in 1916 while fighting in France. He received France's Legion of Honor award in 1998 for his service during World War I. He married Susan Addison in 1917, and they had six children. At the time of his death, he was the last World War I veteran of any country that had fought in 1914. He was also Scotland's oldest person.
