Enlisted in (Union) Nebraska Volunteers Cavalry, 1st Regiment, Company E, on December 30, 1863 in Batesville, Arkansas at age 24. Mustered into service June 2, 1864. Unit primarily participated in actions against Indians in Nebraska and Colorado. Deserted September 18, 1865 at Genoa, Nebraska.

Married Sarah Jane Clarke on December 13, 1866 at the home of John Clark (Sarah's father) in Independence County, Arkansas. They had 7 children.
