Mary D. Cota, 82 Resident for 51 Years Here, Died
One of Grass Valley's picturesque residents, Mary Deneigne Cota, who was born in Canada in 1847, had lived in the United States 70 years and Grass Valley 51 years was called by death last Sunday evening following a short period of declining health. Death took place at the Cota home, 348 East Main Street where the elderly woman had resided with her daughter and sons. Of French Canadian descent, Mrs. Cota retained the characteristics of her people until the time of her death. She was the widow of the late Joseph Cota and was aged 82 years, 5 months and 16 days.
Despite her long continued residence in Grass Valley, Mrs. Cota was but slightly known outside of her immediate neighborhood, but in that sphere she was regarded as one of the kindest and best hearted.
The family was an institution of great reverence in the heart of the deceased woman, her regard for members of her own family of those of her grandchildren occupying high points of interest in her life. Members of the family bereaved are Mrs. M A (Mary Adelaide) Cooley and Mrs. Josephine Hanssen, daughters ; Alfred and Edward Cota, sons; Lieutenant Commander T.R. (Thomas Ross) Cooley of Balboa , Canal Zone and George Cooley of Berkeley, grandsons; and Adelaide Morris Cooley of Balboa, great granddaughter. One brother Wilbert Tremblay resides in Canada, and a second Francis Tremblay in New Hampshire; one sister Mrs. Azilda Sevigny reside in Canada. The remains have been taken to the family home, where they may be viewed by friends. The funeral will be private with interment in the new Catholic cemetery.
