William F. Bowers, chief of the Boston Protective Department, died last night in his sleep at his home, 31 Asticou road, Jamaica Plain. He was 62 years of age and had been associated with the department for 43 years.

A nationally known authority on salvage operations, Chief Bowers had traveled throughout the country on inspection and advisory missions.

He had been chief of the Boston department since December, 1939. In July, 1903, he entered the department and was elevated to lieutenant in 1930, captain in 1935 and deputy superintendent in 1939. While serving as captain he had been in charge on No. 2 House on Appleton street.

Chief Bowers was a trustee of the Boston Fireman's Relief Association, and a member of the Massachusetts Fire Chiefs Association, the New England Fire Chiefs Association, and the National Fire Chiefs Association.

He leaves his widow, Mrs. Mary L. Bowers; two sons, Pvt. Francis Bowers of the Back Bay, a member of the protective department; Edward Bowers of Roslindale; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Tilley of Roslindale; and Miss Ann Bowers of Roslindale; two brothers, John and Frederick of Boston, and a sister, Mrs. James A. Day of West Roxbury.

Funeral services tomorrow at 10 A.M. at St. Thomas' Church, South street, Jamaica Plain, with burial in St. Joseph's cemetery, West Roxbury.

The son of William Bowers (born in Nova Scotia) and Catherine J. Curley (born in Boston). In 1883, father William Bowers' occupation was Blacksmith.
