Death of Dr. Hazael B. Powell.
For the past few years the general health of Dr. H. B. Powell has been gradually failing, and some three or four weeks ago he was compelled to take to his bed, from which he never arose in this life. death came to his relief on Saturday evening last, at 7 o'clock, when he surrendered to the call of the dead messenger, which must come to all of us, sooner or later. The deceased was in the 60th year of his age, and leaves a wife and a son to mourn his departure.
Hazael Benjamin Powell was born in Napoleon on the 24th day of February 1837. He read medicine under the instruction of Dr. Henry McHenry, for about five years, devoting such time thereto as could be spared from his duties as clerk in his father's store. He attended the University of Michigan during the winter of the years 1857 and 1858. He afterward attended the Jefferson Medical College, at Philadelphia, and was graduated from that institution in the spring of 1861. He then commenced to practice at Napoleon in partnership with Dr. McHenry and continued until August, 1861, when he enlisted as private in Company B, Thirty-eighth infantry. The knowledge of his professional ability coming to the commanding officers, he was detailed to surgical duty in the hospital at various places. He became a veteran at the expiration of his enlistment term, and was subsequently advanced to the rank of surgeon-in-chief of the Third Brigade, Third Division, Fourteenth Army Corps. At the close of the war he was mustered out of service and returned to his practice in this city, which he has continued up to the time of his fatal illness.
The funeral took place from the family residence on Clinton Street on Tuesday, at 2 o'clock p.m. under the auspices of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Knights of Pythias.
