John E. Garland, 78, of the Red Hill Community in Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 16th, 2011 in the Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. He was the son of the late Burton and Desdami Sparks Garland. Helso preceded in death by brothers: Howard, James and Samuel "Rush" Garland and daughter Benita Gail Maney. He attended Heaven Bound Church where he served as a deacon. John retired from Henredon after 27 years of service and then went to work as a door greeter at Walmart. He loved his family, friends, and enjoyed being around people. Surviving is his loving wife of 59 years, Evelyn Tipton of Bakersville; sister, Alice Greene and husband, George, of Fayettville; Grandchildren: Kenny Maney and Wife,Lisa, Mark Maney, Tonya Shepherd, Billy Shepherd and wife, Lydia, Ryan Cook and wife, Shana and Kasey Cook and Wife, Cara; five great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 20th, 2011 in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. The Rev. Allen Laws will officiate. Burial will be in the Garland Family Cemetery.
