Sequim, WA — LCDR John Joseph "JJ" Jamroga, United States Navy Retired, 86, of Sequim, WA, lost his short battle with pancreatic cancer on Thursday, January 30, 2014.

JJ was born in Stamford, CT on December 29, 1927 to Polish immigrant parents, Albert Jamroga (Deceased) and Lucy Mikos-Jamroga (Deceased). He enlisted in the U.S. Navy following his graduation from Stamford High School in Stamford, CT in 1946. He attended Boot Camp in Bainbridge, MD and Photography School in Pensacola, FL, where he began his illustrious career as a Naval Photographer and an instructor at the Navy Photography School in Pensacola, FL.

JJ attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, where he received his commission. He was considered a Mustang after completing the Enlisted to Officer Program. In his 35 years of active duty, he served aboard the battleships, USS Willard Keith and USS Coral Sea, and the aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise. He was actively involved in the photography of the activity in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He served in Operation Deep Freeze, based at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC, where he spent two years in Antarctica photographing the landscapes and life forms at the South Pole and assisting in the mapping of Antarctica. A mountain in Antarctica was named in his honor, Mount Jamroga (you can Google it). He also worked at the Naval Photographic Center in Anacostia, Washington, DC, and was deployed to Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam for a year.

He retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1979, and moved to Crystal City, VA where he returned to duty as a contractor, working at the Pentagon. Following that assignment in 1981, he retired to Pensacola, FL, and later moved to Sequim, WA.

JJ stayed very active in his retirement. He enjoyed attending Navy reunions and reconnecting with the people with whom he served. He belonged to the National Association of Naval Photographers and the "Vappers," and took two trips each year to attend their reunions. Prior to his illness, he walked a few miles every day, and worked with veterans groups to assist veterans in filing claims for disability compensation.

Besides his parents, JJ was preceded in death by all of his siblings, Helen Jamroga (Died in Infancy), Walter Jamroga (1914-2007), Albina Jamroga-Gluz-Wiegand (Deceased), Danny Jamroga (Deceased), Eddie Jamroga (Died in 2013), Teddy Jamroga (Deceased) and Henry Jamroga (Deceased); and two sons-in-law, Paul Krolak (1946-1990) and Arthur Belville, Sr. (Died in 1998).

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 35 years, Joyce Jamroga of Sequim, WA; his daughters, Patty Ann Jamroga-Krolak-Greene (B. 1953) and her husband Norman (B. 1937) of District Heights, MD, and Pamela Jamroga-Belville (B. 1955) of The Woodlands, TX; his grandchildren, Angie Shivers (B. 1974) and her husband Jason (B. 1964) of The Woodlands, TX, Brian Krolak (B. 1976) and his wife Vickie (B. 1976) of Frederick, MD, Douglas Krolak (B. 1979), of District Heights, MD and Arthur "AJ" Belville Jr. (B. 1988) of the Woodlands, TX; his great grandchildren, Michael Krolak (B. 2001) of Virginia Beach, VA, Amber Krolak (B. 2003) and Paige Krolak (B. 2008) of Frederick, MD, and Savannah Shivers (B. 2011) and Madison Shivers (B. 2013) of The Woodlands, TX; and his former wife and mother of his children, Bernice Denise Fortin-Jamroga-Shirey (1929-2016) of Clinton, MD.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 26, 2015 at 12:30 at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, where burial with full military honors will take place.
