Edward Van Bemmel of Beaverton, passed away on Sept. 4 after a brief illness. He was 89.

Born in Jersey City, N.J., he was one of eight sons of Joseph and Kathryn (von Atzigen) Van Bemmel. In 1942, after graduation from Saint Peter's Preparatory, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and served on Liberty ships during World War II.

Ed was a marine surveyor for 33 years and faithful member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church. An avid birder, he had a passion and extensive knowledge of nature. Ed is remembered for his dignity, honesty, thoughtful intelligence and his caring love for his family.

Ed was faithful husband to Elizabeth Van Bemmel for 65 years. He leaves his wife; and three children, Meredith Long, Christopher Van Bemmel and Adrienne Banks; and four grandchildren.

Military Honors will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012 at 12 p.m. Arrangements by Springer And Son.
