Homer H. Benedum, 85, of Weston passed, away at 7:15 p.m. on February 6, 2014, at Heartland of Preston County in Kingwood following an extended illness.

Homer was born August 5, 1928, one of 11 children of the late Loyle O. and Ethel (Waybright) Benedum of Kincheloe.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David H. and Patty (Fraley) Benedum of Masontown, and Eric F. and Bertha (Burnside) Benedum of Weston; by four grandchildren, Stephen A. Benedum and wife Kristina of Bluefield, Erin M. Benedum of Ellicott City, Md., Michael K. Benedum and wife Angela of Ona, and Jason S. Benedum and wife Latricha of Weston; by five great-grandchildren, Alexis, Jenna, Kendra, Elise and Evelyn; by one sister, Ruth (Benedum) Paugh of Jane Lew, and by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death in 2012 by his beloved wife of 62 years, Alma (Miller) Benedum, and by his siblings, Paris Benedum, Orva Benedum, Bertha (Benedum) Houghton, Bessie Benedum, John Benedum, Loyle Junior Benedum, Howard Benedum, Carl Benedum and Cynthia (Benedum) Richards.

Homer was a proud graduate of Unidas High School, Class of 1946, and for many years was an active member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Weston. He was a Master Mason for almost 55 years, Past Master of Weston Lodge No. 10, A.F. & A.M., Past Commander of Knights Templar, St. Johns No. 8, Past High Priest of the Bigelow Chapter No. 4, Royal Arch Masons, a member of the Knight York Cross of Honour, a 32nd-Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Nemesis Shrine Temple of Parkersburg and the Lewis County Shrine Club.

He also worked for many years with the young men of Lewis County as a member of the Advisory Council and Chapter Dad of the Frank S. Land Chapter of the Order of DeMolay, and served until recently on the Board of Directors of the W.Va. DeMolay Foundation.


After working for many years as a salesman for the National Biscuit Company, he retired to go into business for himself and opened Benedum Locksmith and Security until he retired for a second time in 2007 to care for his ailing wife full time.

Family and friends will be received at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home, 730 N. Main Avenue, Weston, on Monday, February 10, 2014, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Leslie Benedum officiating. Interment will follow services in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens of Mt. Clare, WV. Weston Lodge No. 10 A.F. & A.M. will conduct graveside rites.
