San Clemente has lost another 'old-timer'. Charles "Chuck" H. Nauman passed away January 28, 2014. Chuck was born in Arkansas on March 28, 1928, just at the start of the Great Depression. Shortly after, his father loaded the family and their belongings into a truck and started a journey that would become Chuck's life. The family drove across the Dust Bowl to California, traveling up and down the state picking potatoes, lettuce, whatever was ready for picking. Eventually, Chuck's father settled down in the Sacramento Valley, becoming a general contractor. Here Chuck learned the building trades. While working in Brawley, California, he met a young woman named Ima Pearl Freeman. She was a pretty young woman he called Bright Eyes because she had such bright blue eyes. They married and had three children. In 1960, Chuck established Nauman Electric. He taught the trade to his son who carried on the family business. Until his death, he would regal his friends and family of stories about the many homes and buildings he wired through the years including his work at the Western White House. Sometime in the mid 1960's, he earned the name Grumpy Grandpa, a name he wore proudly. During Christmas, 1980, tragedy struck and Ima died of a massive stroke.

In 1985, Chuck met a woman who so impressed him, she would become his wife. Priscilla LaTourneau and Chuck were married in 1986. Priscilla brought four children of her own to the family. Together they celebrated the holidays and birthdays of their blended family; children (9), grandchildren (11) and great grandchildren (9 plus one more due in May, 2014). Chuck loved all of them very much. He had a great deal of pride in them. Later in life, Chuck and Priscilla enjoyed traveling. Each morning he met a group of friends at a gym, they would then have breakfast at the local McDonalds discussing world events until it was time to go to work. Every Tuesday, he met with his tenants where he loved to collect rent, chat and have lunch. He loved his tenants and maintained a friendly, close relationship with them. Chuck's middle child, Charlotte predeceased him in March, 2007. Leukemia took Priscilla from Chuck in February, 2009. His eldest daughter, Suzanne, passed away in December, 2012. The loss of the most important woman in his life dealt him a terrific blow from which he never recovered. Chuck left behind many, many people who loved and respected him. Good-bye Old Timer!
A memorial and reception will be held February 8 at 11AM at the Church of the Foothills, 19211 Dodge St., Santa Ana, CA.
