Marius, a perfectly healthy young (only 18 months old) giraffe was killed with a bolt gun and then cut up so his body could be fed to the lions at Copenhagen Zoo.
People from many countries were outraged when the Zoo announced the plans to kill Marius because he did not fit into their breeding program. Many offers from other zoos, wildlife sanctuaries and even a private buyer who offered 500,000 euros. The zoo however, said that no offers had been received. The discrepancy seems to stem from the fact that the zoo is a member of EAZA which is a breeding program and animals from member institutions may not be transferred to outside institutions who do not follow it's breeding programs.
