Edward E. Harriman Sr., 86, of Greenberry Road, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.


"Born June 23, 1914, in Germany, he was the son of the late Julius and Anna Behrendt Harriman.

"He received an A.B. degree from Tufts University in Medford, Mass., and was a past certified instructor of Dale Carnegie courses.

"He retired in 1982 as a counselor with the Department of Corrections, State of Maryland. He was previously assigned to Maryland Correctional Institution in Breathedsville, Md., and was employed by Victor Products Corp. for 21 years.

"A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Military Intelligence Service and U.S. Military Government in Europe. He received the Bronze Star Medal, two battle stars, a Presidential Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with Palms.

"He was a member of and teacher at John Wesley United Methodist Church, and on the administrative board. He was past secretary of Four States Christian Missions and past director of operations of its New Life Treatment Center.

"He served on the Washington County Property Tax Appeals Board , was a past member of Washington County Plumbing Board and Washington County/City of Hagerstown Commission on Duplication of Services.

"He was a director of Hagerstown Community Concert Associations, past member of board of directors of American Cancer Society, and past treasurer of Cumberland Valley Chapter of Data Processing Management Association. He was assistant treasurer of Hagerstown-Wesel Town Affiliations.

"He was a member, past president and director of Lions Club of Halfway, past deputy district governor and held offices in Lions Clubs International District 22-W. He received a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, among others.

"He was chaplain of B.P.O. Elks Hagerstown Lodge 378, and a member of its investigating and Americanism committees, and a past member of the board of trustees. He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 212; American Legion Morris Frock Post 42, Travelers Protective Association of America, American Association of Retired Persons National, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, and The Maryland Theatre.

"He is survived by his wife, Margaret L. Harriman; one son, Edward E. Harriman Jr. of Roanoke, Va.; one grandson, Edward Scott Harriman of Roanoke, Va; and nieces.

"He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Harriman and Walter Harriman.

"Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond T. Moreland will officiate. Private burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, Va.

"The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., with a memorial service conducted by the Elks Club at 7:30 p.m.

"In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to John Wesley United Methodist Church, 129 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD 21740."
