Vernon E. Bays, of Kingsport, passed away at his home on Monday (Nov. 22, 2004).
Born in Hiltons, Va., Vernon moved to Kingsport in 1945 after serving in the U.S. Army. He was a pipe-fitter by trade, and during his career, helped construct the Alaskan Pipeline and the Watts Bar Nuclear Power Plant. In 1998, Vernon received the Charlie Keener Good Citizen Award from the Kingsport Evening Civitan Club in recognition of his unselfish service in promoting good citizenship.
A faithful member of the Mafair United Methodist Church, Vernon enjoyed his special friends in the Homebuilders Class, who will serve as honorary pallbearers. Vernon's mission was to improve the lives of others without a hint of personal recognition. He served his church by serving on many committees.
He was preceded in death by his parents, F. M. Bays Sr. and Etta Kate Barker Bays; four brothers, Howard Johnson Bays, Henry Bays, Walter Oliver Bays and Mervin Eugene Bays; five sisters, Elsie Mazella Barker, Norville Detroit Bays, Eva Bays, Colly Washington Bays and Edna Pearl Bays.

Bays Jr. and Donald Bays, both of Hiltons, Va., Claude Harold Bays of Blountville; sisters, Nora Lee Hayter of Nashville, Janelle Jayne of Hiltons, Va., and Joanne Starnes of Kingsport; also special brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lawrence Bellamy of Kingsport, Joe and Helen Mercer of Hickory, N.C., Eddie and Barbara Cassity of Albany, Ga., and Shelburne and Beulah Ferguson of Blountville; and many special nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a "Special Thanks" for the kindness and care shown by Dr. Charles Bruton, Dr. David Franzus, Dr. Joseph Smiddy and Dr. Harrison Turner and their staffs.
