Soldier commemorated 95 years after death
A soldier in Guernsey has been commemorated today, October 13, 95 years after his death with a Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) headstone.
The CWGC erected the memorial for Private Walter Henry Marquis, 1st Battalion, Gloucester Regiment, who died in April 1921 at Buttevant Military Hospital in Ireland. He had been accidentally shot in the head during a military operation at Banteer.
Walter is buried at Foulon Cemetery, St. Peter Port, and served as John (Jack) Henry Marquis. He was the son of John David and Louisa Marquis, of St. Peter Port, Guernsey.
The funeral of Private Marquis was described in a local newspaper at the time:
‘The funeral took place with military honours of Drummer W. H. Marquis, of the 1st Battalion Gloucester Regiment. The relatives and friends met at St. Paul’s Church. A large number of general public were present at the church gates to witness the departure of the cortège.
‘The coffin was borne on a gun-carriage, draped with the Union Jack, and covered in choice wreaths and floral tokens. The two beautifully groomed chargers were driven by Mr Waldrop.’
