The son of Jacob & Ann Eliza (Addams) Beaver, in 1850 he and his siblings lived with Rev. Samuel McDonald in Union Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, he was a clerk living in Lewisburg, Union County.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Union County October 1, 1861, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 16 as 2nd lieutenant of Co. H, 51st Pennsylvania Infantry, and promoted to 1st lieutenant June 6, 1862. He was killed in action at the battle of Antietam during the attack on the Rohrbach (Burnside) Bridge.
