Steven L. Harper, age 58, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, died Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at the Ft. Scott Medicalodge.

He was born October 4, 1955, in Ft. Scott, Kansas, the son of Harold LaVerne Harper and Ruby Mae Miller Harper.

He married Cho Hillman in 1978.

Steven had been employed by Topco Laminates. He also worked as a handyman.

He enjoyed being outdoors, woodworking and photography.

Survivors include his wife, Cho of Ft. Scott; four children, Brian Hillman and wife, Tara, Springfield, Missouri, Meay Chau Hart and husband, Ethan, Robert Harper and wife, Amanda, and Matthew Harper all of Ft. Scott; and fifteen grandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers, John Harper, Rush Springs, Oklahoma, James Harper and wife, Debbie, Arma, Kansas, David Harper and wife, Ellen, Bronson, Kansas, and Michael Harper, Ft. Scott, Kansas; two sisters, Debra Hazen and Rose Mary Pollard, both of Ft. Scott.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct funeral services at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, February 19th at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Centerville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Tuesday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701.

Ruby Mae Harper, age 88, resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, died early Friday, January 15, 2010, at Mercy Health Center.

She was born January 8, 1922, in Pittsburg, Kansas, the daughter of Elmer Miller and Mamie Edwards Miller.

She first married Herman Wesley Bacon in 1941. He was killed during World War II.

She later married Harold LaVerne Harper on December 29, 1945, at Fort Scott, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 9, 1989.

Ruby worked as an aide at Mercy Hospital as well as Arkhaven Nursing Home. She later provided in-home care for elderly individuals. In addition to providing medical care, Ruby also worked as a seamstress and made many wedding and prom dresses. She also enjoyed gardening, quilting and playing cards.

She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her children; Rose Mary Pollard, Moundville, Missouri, John Harper, Rush Springs, Oklahoma, Jim Harper and wife, Debbie, Arma, Kansas, David Harper and wife, Ellen, Bronson, Kansas, Deborah Hazen, Fort Scott, Steven Harper and Michael Harper, all of Fort Scott. Also surviving are two brothers, Elmer Miller and wife, Mabel, Hiattville, Kansas and Herbert Miller and wife, Vangie, Rush Springs, Oklahoma; twenty-two grandchildren; fifty-five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Herman Bacon, a sister, Viola Calderone, a brother, Delbert George, two grandchildren, Jamie Barrows and Nick Pollard; and two great-grandchildren, Shawn Harper and Cory Harper.

Pastor Carl Ellis and Pastor Janet Myers will conduct funeral services at 1:30 P.M. Monday, January 18, 2010, at the St. John's United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow in the Centerville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the St. John's United Methodist Church Youth Dept. and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701.
