Son of Thomas Starlet Butler and Susan "Susie" Paschall his wife. John enlisted as a private on the 24th day of December 1863 in Danville, Virginia. He was mustered into Company G, 45th Regiment North Carolina Troops Confederate States Army. On the 2nd day of April 1865 he was captured in Petersburg, Virginia and sent to the Union Prisoner War camp, Point Lookout, Maryland. He was released on 23 rd of June 1865. His POW records has his place of residence as Rockingham County, NC. His physical appearance as fair complexion, hair brown, eyes grey and his height as 5' 8 1/2" .
