Emily A. Carpenter, 67, of Massey, MD passed away peacefully on Monday, December 29, 2008 at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE.
Born on March 20, 1941 in Waynesburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Parkinson) Adamson.
Emily received her BS in Health and Physical Education from Pennsylvania State University and a MS in Human Resource Management from Wilmington College in Delaware. She most recently retired with more than 40 years of teaching at Middletown High School and the Appoquinimink School District combined.
She was a high school coach of field hockey, softball and volleyball and served as an assistant athletic director for eight years. Emily has been a pairing master in the Middle Atlantic AAU District for 35 years including eight years as the District Pairing Chairperson. She has also been a national wrestling pairing master for twenty-five years and served on the national wrestling executive committee for ten years, including serving as secretary for eight years. She served as the Wrestling Tournament Director for the Junior Olympic Games for twelve years and was a life member of the AAU. Emily was also a swim and CPR instructor for the American Red Cross.
Emily's professional affiliations include the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association State Softball Tournament Committee from 1986-2006, President of The Appoquinimink Education Association for six years, Secretary for the Appoquinimink Education Association for ten years, Middletown High School Wrestling Tournament Director for ten years and St. Andrew's School Wrestling Tournament Director for five years.
She currently was a member of the Delaware and National State Education Associations, Alpha Delta Kappa, American Association for University Women, as well as the Delaware and National Associations for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Emily has been recognized for her hard work and dedication with numerous awards. She received the Walnut Street YMCA Wrestling Service Award in 1985 and 1989, AAU Wrestling Committee Official of the Year in 1988, AAU Junior Olympic Games Leadership Award in 1991, 1994, 1996 and 1997, AAU President's Leadership Award in 1996, and the National Wrestling Committee Outstanding Pairing Master in 1999.
When Emily wasn't busy teaching or coaching, she enjoyed making doll houses and miniature furniture, creating shadow boxes, working on crossword puzzles, traveling and going to the beach. Her artistic abilities where expressed in her paintings, especially those done in water color and in her beautiful calligraphy writings. Christmas was Emily's favorite time of the year when she delighted in sharing her extensive collection of Santa Claus' with others.
In addition to her parents, Emily was preceded in death by a brother, Commander John C. Adamson.
She leaves a life full of memories to her husband of 43 years, Fred W. Carpenter, Sr.; a daughter, Susan Carpenter-Hill and her husband, Steven of Townsend; two sons, Fred W. Carpenter, Jr. and his wife, Brenda of Newark and John L. Carpenter and his wife, Dawn of Harrington; a granddaughter, Brittany Carpenter and another grandchild expected in June; as well as many dear friends and colleagues.
Memorial services will be held 2 pm on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street, Middletown, DE where family and friends may visit one hour prior to services. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Special Olympics of Delaware, University of Delaware, 619 S. College Avenue, Newark, DE 19716-1901.
