While performing his duties as ditch superintendent of the Frenchman Valley Irrigation District, Henry Bauer was suddenly stricken with a heart attack last Friday afternoon and died almost immediately.

The collapse of Mr. Bauer occurred while he was supervising a crew of men working on the John Bauer lateral, south of the John Kern farm and about one and one-half miles east of Culbertson. He had made no complaint of not feeling well. He was stricken when he paused and sat down, as though for a moment's rest.

Mr. Bauer, who had resided on a farm three miles northwest of Culbertson for 30 years, was one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of this community. He had been active in affairs of the Frenchman Valley Irrigation District for a long time, serving as director for three years before becoming ditch superintendent two years ago. The position of superintendent is believed to have been a severe strain upon his health, as he was very conscientious and devoted much energy to his work.

Henry Bauer, son of Adam and Katherine Bauer, was born in Frank, Russia on August 20, 1877 and departed this life on May 8, 1942 at the age of 64 years, 8 months, and 19 days. When eight years of age, he came to America with his parents, who settled at once in the Culbertson community. Since then he had always resided in this vicinity.

Henry was baptized into the Christian faith when an infant and during his youth he became a member of the German Methodist church of Culbertson. In 1905 he joined Zion Evangelical church. He was active in church work, holding various offices and being steward of the church at the time of his death.

Mr. Bauer was united in marriage with Elizabeth Wacker on May 15, 1904. This union was blessed with four children, all of whom survive. Mr. Bauer was known as a devoted husband, a kind and loving father, and a good neighbor.

Left to mourn the passing of Mr. Bauer are his widow, three sons, Edward and Kenneth of Culbertson and Alfred of Falls City, Nebraska and one daughter, Mrs. Marie Strayer of Palisade, Nebraska. He is also survived by two brothers, George and Jake, both residents of the Culbertson community, and two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Herbst and Mrs. Anna Marie Thout, both of Hastings, Nebraska besides numerous other relatives.

A large concourse of people attended the funeral services Sunday afternoon in Zion Evangelical church and accompanied the remains to the Culbertson Cemetery, where interment was made. During the funeral services, which were conducted by Rev. Frank E. Schroeder, hymns were sung by a mixed quartette composed of Mr. and Ms. Everett Kern, Miss Rogene Schleiger, and Raymond Eisenach.

Relatives who came here from other places to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Paul Herbst, Mr. and Mrs. William Gettman and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lenhart and daughter, all from Hastings, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bauer of Falls City, Nebraska; Fred Fitzwater and son and Mrs. Kate Bailey and daughter, all from McCook.
