Carolyn M. Gruenwald, 96, of Redfield, SD, died Monday, February 17, 2014 at Golden Living Center in Redfield, Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, February 21, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church at Redfield. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Zell wth lunch and fellowship at the hall in Zell. Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. www.thelenfuneralhome.com

Carolyn Mary was born September 2, 1917 in Spink County, SD to Otto and Anna Marie (Fink) Moeller. As a young girl, she rode her horse to country school and later attended St. Mary's School in Zell. Carolyn married Jerome G. Gruenwald on August 22, 1936 in Zell. They lived and farmed in the Redfield/Zell are and Carolyn worked in the kitchen at Mountain 11 School.

Carolyn enjoyed dancing, canning and taking care of her children and her family.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxilary and a charter member of the Catholic Daughters in Zell and a Gold Star Mother.

Carolyn is survived by her children: Norita Rice of Frankfort, SD; Wilfred "Willie" (Patty) Gruenwald of CLark,SD; Irene (Roald) Amundson of Redfield; Jean (Brandt Roberts) Wallman of Arvada, CO; Karen (Dennis) Lau of Westin, MO; Francis (Janet) Gruenwald of Redfield; Janice (Bill) Winegar of Rapid City, SD; Joseph Gurenwald of Warner, SD; Betty (Jim Trenhaile) Moore of Redfield; Mary (Peter) Wurtz of Jacksonville, FL; Richard (Bette) Gruenwald of Redfield; Jerome "Jerry" (Jacquie) Gruenwald of Redfield; and Douglas Gruenwald of Wright, WY. She is also survived by 47 grandchildren, 79 great grandchildren, many-many great-great grandchildren and one brother Edward "Allen" Villa Moeller of Redfield.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jerome in 1986, her son Michael during Vietnam, her daughter Margaret Owen, her granddaughter Carol Lundholm, her grandson Corey Schoepp, her brothers: Martin, Edwin and Laurens Moeller, her sisters: Clara Gruenwald and Edna Sanford. She was also preceded in death by three sons-in-law: Richard J. Rice, Jerry Wallman and Jon Owen.
