Elmer Elsworth Whitlatch, 95, went home to his Heavenly Father, Feb. 17, 2014.
He was born in Parkersburg, Oct. 15, 1918, son of the late Albert and Gertrude Whitlatch.
Prior to his mother's death in January of 1919, he was baptized at Bethany United Methodist Church, where he remained a beloved lifetime member. A veteran of WWII, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps for three and a half years in the European Theatre. For many years, Elmer and Jo owned and operated Pop's Candy Company, well known for its homemade hard candy toys, candied apples and candy canes. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 1974, after which he turned his life-long hobby of stamp collecting into a home business of selling stamps to collectors and retailers.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Josephine (Taylor) Whitlatch; one son, Rev. Ronald (Rev. Cathy) Whitlatch; three daughters, Beverly (Mike) Spiker, Sandy (Butch) Tritt and Sherry (Russ) Luzader; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one half-brother, Glen Whitlatch. He was preceded in death by his aunt and uncle who raised him, Mom (Susanna) and Pop (Asa) Mowery; his brother, Larry (Dorothy) Whitlatch; four step-brothers, Earl, Claude, Russell and Everett Mowery; and one half-brother, Blaine Whitlatch.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, 6-8 p.m., and one hour prior to the service.
