John Wesley Ballinger was a Civil War Veteran, serving as a Private in Company C, 12th Iowa Infantry. He is listed in the Widow's Pension. His second wife, Mary Ann received his pension until her death.

In the PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM OF MAHASKA COUNTY, IOWA there is a biography of Rev. Thomas Ballinger (1817-1897) who lived in Osklaloosa, Iowa. John Wesley Ballinger was the nephew of Rev. Thomas Ballinger. J.W.'s father was Joshua Ballinger and was the older brother to Rev. Ballinger. After John Wesley Ballinger's wife, Phebe passed away, John married Mary Ann Fitzpatrick on November 10, 1874 in Logan County, Ohio. John took his new bride back to his farm in Mahaska County, Iowa.
