Philip G. Barnes, 90, passed away on Nov. 26, 2005 after a 5 year bout with cancer.
He was born in N. Carolina but the family relocated to Akron in time for him to start school. He received his education in the Akron Public Schools graduating from Kenmore High School in 1935. He then attended the Barberton School of Commerce, the University of Akron and Akron Law School and was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1953. He also attended police administration schools at Louisville University and
Harvard University as well as the FBI Training Academy. Phil engaged in the practice of law for several years as an associate of William L. Curtice.

He joined the Akron Police Dept. in 1940 and retired in 1992 with over 51 years of service. During his tenure he worked in all divisions of the department, with 20 years as Deputy Chief and 9 years as Chief of Police. Prior to World War II he served an enlistment in the Ohio National Guard and 2 years and 4 months in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Phil was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Police Retirees Association, Ohio & International Association of Chiefs of Police, Akron Crime Clinic, Bluecoats, Inc., Akron Bar Association, Akron Law School Alumni Association, East Akron Board of Trade, and the YMCA where he enjoyed the game of Hand Ball. His Masonic memberships include Adoniram-Joppa Lodge #517, Scottish Rites Valley of Akron 33 degree, Tadmor Shrine, Legion of Honor of DeMolay, and the Royal Order of Jesters.

In 1987 Phil, along with Judge Mary Caccioppo, were honored by the Akron Law School Alumni Association as outstanding alumnae. In 1992 Phil received the prestigious Sir Thomas More award presented by Bishop Anthony Pella of the Catholic Diocese in cooperation with the Akron Bar Association.
In 2002 Sheriff Drew Alexander and his staff honored him with an award for his long service to the community and to law enforcement and at the same time announced the Philip G. Barnes Award" to be presented to an outstanding present or past law enforcement officer. In 2004 Kenmore High School added Phil's picture, along with 6 other honorees, to their wall of fame.

Preceded in death by first wife, Mary Ann, daughter, Bonnie Lee, and second wife, Carolyn; Phil is survived by his stepson, Art McIntyre and wife, Kay; stepdaughter, Ann Michaels; half brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Margaret Barnes; sister-in-law, Martha Jones; grandchildren, Alison, Molly, Madison, and Chase McIntyre, Tom and Lesley Michaels; plus numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and a very special friend, Elizabeth Cooper.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bath United Church of Christ, 3980 W. Bath Rd., with Rev. Jack Cunningham, Chaplain, Akron Area Police Retirees and Widows, officiating. Friends may call at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Tuesday 4-8 p.m. with Royal Order of Jesters service at 8:13 p.m. Private internment at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospitals, c/o Tadmor Temple, 3000 Krebs Dr., Akron 44319 or Hospice of VNS, 3358 Ridgewood Rd., Akron 44333.
