George A. Withers, the son of John G. Withers and Leona (Parisot) Withers, was born, raised, and died in Scranton PA where he had been employed with Bell Telephone Co. until his retirement after 44 years of service as a switchman in the central office. He was also a WWII Navy veteran, having served from April 1944 to December 1945.

He was married to Grace (Shaw) for many years and they lived on Harding St. in Scranton until she passed away. They had no children. When we, his nieces and nephews, would visit he always had a riddle or some type of problem for us to figure out. We also enjoyed his keen, yet dry, sense of humor. He quite often would say a little something that would embarrass Aunt Grace and she usually responded with an, "Oh, George." He remained in the home following her death and later married Teresa LeStrange McGregor who survived him. He was also survived by his sisters Leona (Withers) Gibbs and Aline (Withers) Gillman-Seche as well as six nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his younger brother John (Jack) Withers.

He was a member of Myrtle St. United Methodist Church, a member of the Masons, the American Legion, and the Bell Telephone Pioneers of America. He was also a volunteer with the Lackawanna County Asso. for the Blind.

Funeral services were held in the Thomas-Hughes Funeral Home of Scranton with burial in Cathedral Cemetery which is located just a few blocks from his childhood home.
