He served as Professor of anatomy and assistant Professor in physiology at Shaw University. He was the first black licensed surgeon in Vance County, NC. He was Chief operator and surgeon of Jubilee Hospital. A street in Henderson, NC is named in his honor.

He was father to one daughter, Cora B. Beckford, and a son, Eugene Beckford, who was born in Boston and a son of his first wife, Georgianna. Her name was often spelled Georgie Anna.
