Born and educated at Port Maria, Jamaica. Leaving Jamaica, he attended Howard University and Boston University. He served as Professor of anatomy and assistant Professor in physiology at Shaw University. He was the first black licensed surgeon in Vance County, NC. He was Chief operator and surgeon of Jubilee Hospital. A street in Henderson, NC is named in his honor.
He was married twice. Married Georgianna Bowie in May 28, 1912, at Ontario, Canada, and after her death, later married Cora B. Davis, April 29, 1920 at Mecklenburg, Virginia. He was father to one daughter, Cora B. Beckford, and a son, Eugene Beckford, who was born in Boston and a son of his first wife, Georgianna. Her name was often spelled Georgie Anna.
